Theme: Resilient Health Systems in a Changing World
It is with great humility and pride that I assume the role of President of the Kandy Society of
Medicine. I am deeply honoured to lead this esteemed society, which for decades has stood as a
beacon of professional excellence, service and unity among the medical fraternity in our region.
We gather at a time when the world around us is changing at an unprecedented pace. Pandemics,
climate change, economic instability, demographic transitions, technological advances, and
evolving patient expectations continue to challenge health systems across the globe. Sri Lanka is
no exception. These realities compel us to reflect, adapt, and most importantly, to strengthen our
health systems to withstand shocks while continuing to deliver equitable, high-quality care. This
is why our theme for the year, “Resilient Health Systems in a Changing World,” is both
timely and essential.
A resilient health system is not merely one that survives crises; it is one that learns, adapts, and
emerges stronger. It is a system built on a skilled and motivated workforce, strong primary care,
robust public health infrastructure, ethical leadership, and evidence-based decision-making. It
values innovation while remaining grounded in compassion, equity, and service to the most
vulnerable. As clinicians, educators, and leaders, we are central to shaping such resilience.
The Kandy Society of Medicine has a vital role to play in this journey. Through continuous
medical education, academic discourse, research, and advocacy, we can empower our members
to respond effectively to emerging health challenges. By fostering collaboration across
specialties and sectors, and by engaging with policymakers and the community, we can help
translate knowledge into meaningful action that strengthens our health system from the
grassroots to the tertiary level.
As we move forward, let us draw strength from our collective wisdom, our shared values, and
our unwavering commitment to patients and society. Let us support one another, nurture young
professionals, and embrace change with courage and purpose. Together, we can contribute to a
health system that is not only resilient, but also just, sustainable, and responsive to the needs of
our people.
I invite all members to actively engage in the activities of the society during the year ahead and
to join hands in making this vision a reality. With unity, dedication, and foresight, I am confident
