Flood and Disaster Relief Project – Mathurata
The Kandy Society of Medicine (KSM) successfully carried out its 4th Humanitarian Programme in Mathurata, focusing on flood and disaster relief for communities affected by severe landslides. This mission was pioneered and facilitated by Professor M. D. Lamawansa, in collaboration with the Ambagaspitiya Temple, Mathurata.
Mathurata was one of the most difficult regions to access due to continuous landslides and hazardous terrain. Many displaced individuals were stranded in areas unreachable by vehicles. Despite these challenges, KSM mobilized and delivered essential dry rations and basic medications to the affected families, ensuring that critical support reached those in need.
The programme was attended by:
Prof. Arinda Dharmapala – President, KSM
Dr. Yohan Silva – Consultant Obstetrician & Gynaecologist, Base Hospital Rikillagaskada
Dr. Sunanda Handiwattage – Consultant Surgeon, Base Hospital Rikillagaskada
Dr. Anura Rajapakse – Council Member, KSM
Dr. (Mrs.) T. Kannangara – Consultant Physician
Special appreciation goes to Dr. Pradeep, MOH Mathurata, and Dr. Sampath, AMOH Mathurata, for their invaluable guidance, on-ground support, and physical presence throughout the mission.
